Free monster training game

Monster Yacht Club is a free role-playing game developed by Monster Saga where you can play as a monster trainer. As a trainer, you have to train, take care of, and battle with your monsters. Your role also entails helping them evolve and reach their highest potential through battle experiences.

The monsters in Monster Yacht Club resemble Pokémons or Pocket Monsters not only in appearance but also in the way they are categorized. The game shares a similar gameplay with Pokémon: Emerald, although it fails to match the fun and thrill that players could easily experience in the latter.

Like a Pokémon game

Even at first glance, one can quickly assume that the creators of Monster Yacht Club took inspiration from the hit Pokémon games by Nintendo. The general design of this free-to-download game shares similarities with most titles in the series, especially those released earlier. From the characters to the gameplay, it indeed follows the original, but when you look closely it deviates on small details that are almost unnoticeable.

If you’re familiar with Pokémons like Pikachu, you’re not going to have a hard time dealing with the fictional creatures of this online RPG. Most of their characteristics and abilities overlap, and the stages of their evolutions are virtually identical. What’s more, the same terminologies are used to classify both monster groups. Some of the types are Fire, Flying, Ghost, Grass, and Electric, where Pikachu belongs.

Training monsters involves challenging other trainers to battle against your monsters. The game makes use of a turn-based combat system, allowing you more time to think before making a move. There is also an Adventure mode where you can take breaks from the intense battles. Despite modeling after Pokémon titles, this game lacks the sophistication of the original’s gameplay and graphics — not to mention the annoying glitches.

Dull and with persistent issues

If you want to give Monster Yacht Club a try, you have to manage your expectations. Fans are bound to be disappointed for its failure to measure up to the original. The game can become boring once you get the hang of it, and the low-quality graphics do not help. On top of that, you have to bear with unresolved bugs that interrupt the game flow.

PROS

  • Pokémon-inspired characters
  • Turn-based strategy

CONS

  • Unrefined gameplay
  • Crashes at times
